Recently, a woman in Indiana who had stopped replying to texts from a man she went on a date with was sent an invoice from the man asking her to remit payment for the date. She posted the invoice online. It went viral.

This is not the first time I have heard of this. Another post recently went viral after a man requested his money back for drinks on a cash app because the woman wasn’t interested in him. The responses to this phenomenon have been interesting. It seems that most women see this behavior as ridiculous. However, some men actually feel that it is fair to ask for their money back for a date that does not go well. I find this reasoning laughable.

Sexism and patriarchy have created an environment where men feel entitled to attention from women. Many men actually believe that by spending money on a date they are putting in value for a woman’s attention and time. That’s why these men are asking for their money back. They feel that if they spend money while with a woman then that woman owes them something. This is a false perception. Women do not owe men anything for a date. In fact, women never have and never will owe men anything by going on a date with them or even accepting a drink from them.

If you ask a woman out or buy her a drink, her free will doesn’t disappear just because you opened your wallet. Your money pays for the services or goods from the business you happen to patronize. Your money is not paying for the time of the woman you are out with. You are paying for food, drinks, and activities. If you are dissatisfied with those goods or services ask for your money back from those establishments. Only if you were paying a woman for her time, actually paying her, not paying for food or drinks, only then could you ask for a refund if she did not provide it. Since these men have not actually paid the women for their time, they have no legal leg to stand on with these invoices and refund requests. It’s pure nonsense.

For any man contemplating this foolishness, remember you are not paying any woman directly for her time. Do not ever expect that you deserve attention from a woman because you happened to buy a few appetizers. You don’t!
