Yes, there are people who are actually dating while broke. I am not making this up. There are people who cannot support themselves financially but are actively seeking out and going on dates. Many times these people are actively looking for someone to support them financially. Let’s talk about why this is a bad idea.

Chances are if you were not born into a wealthy family at some point you dated when you had little to no money. In fact, broke dating is perfectly normal in college because for the most part, everyone is broke. (So if you are a broke college student reading this, this blog isn’t about you. Carry on!) However, as an adult, financial stability is a necessary thing, especially when it comes to dating. No one wants to date someone who cannot take care of their own basic needs. Yet, for some reason there are many people out there dating while broke.

Truth is, if you cannot afford to take care of yourself, meaning food, shelter, and clothing, that you pay for all on your own, you should not be dating. Dating should never be higher on your list of priorities than shelter and food. Plus, not being able to manage caring for yourself is indicative of other issues. You should want to be able to take care of yourself before inviting someone to share time with you. If you are not able to take care of yourself on your own please do not date. You are wasting other people’s time. This advice is for men AND women.

What if you are one of the people who happens to be duped into dating someone who is broke? Just know that it is ok to pass on dating someone who isn’t financially stable. This does not make you a bad person. In fact, it is perfectly ok to tell them that dating should not be a priority and they should instead focus on getting their lives together.

To date honestly means sometimes saying the things that may hurt but are necessary. Know that you should not feel bad for passing on dating someone who isn’t financially stable. By passing you can avoid issues down the line. It is ok not to take on other people’s burdens. That’s dating the smart way.

So, if you are too broke to date, just don’t. Get stable first. The dates will always be there!
