No matter how many times we emphasize that every election matters, some people still skip voting in the midterms. This lack of turnout is exactly why, in 2015, a Republican-led Congress was able to block the Supreme Court nominee, a move that signaled the beginning of their assault on the system of checks and balances in this country. Republicans understand that they can’t win without cheating, which is why they resort to tactics that undermine democracy, and they do so without shame.
As a result, we now face an administration emboldened by impunity, and the damage being done to our country is profound. Still, this is not the time to give up. We can’t bury our heads in the sand while a group of racist, sexist individuals dismantle the foundations of our democracy. Now, more than ever, we must rise and fight for change.
Make a plan to vote in the next midterm election. Mobilize others to do the same. The stakes are too high to sit this one out. By then, we hope that enough people will recognize the truth about who these corrupt people are and take action to resist their agenda.
But voting isn’t the only solution, run for office, support candidates who represent your values, and engage with local governments, where real change begins. You have the power to make a difference. It starts with the courage to step up and take action. Together, we can reclaim our country and build a future that reflects justice and equality for all.
