Yesterday, the world was abuzz about the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle. They are now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Women everywhere are still swooning about this fairytale wedding, a woman finding her prince, reinforcing their belief that their own prince is also out there. In my book, Date Like A Woman, I write, “Women have been taught a fantasy about dating since childhood. Girls are told they are all princesses and some day a prince will show up. He will be perfect and love her forever. (Or he will be less than perfect but the girl will forgive his imperfections because he is handsome or rich)! A lot of women think they are immune to this fantasy but trust me, this fantasy is planted subconsciously in the minds of women over and over from childhood to adulthood to the point where women have this expectation of dating the ‘perfect guy.”’
The Royal Wedding has reinforced a dating fantasy that is a problem for single women everywhere. The problem with this fantasy is that it is not real. It is not how dating works at all. To put the reality of dating into perspective, it is highly possible to have a great dating life and to meet great men to date. However, it is most important to understand that dating is not a fairytale. Dating is grounded very realistically in managing your expectations. Marrying a prince is not a realistic dating expectation. Dating someone in your social circle (I explain social circles in my book), is a realistic dating expectation. And, unless you happen to have a social circle that includes princes it is unlikely that your prince is out there.
I don’t want to burst your fantasy bubble. Actually I do. What I do want is for you to see the Royal Wedding for what it is, someone else’s reality. Make sure you look at your own dating reality for what it really is. There may not be a prince waiting for you, but there is a high probability of meeting some very compatible men. So, enjoy your dating life! Get out there and Date Like A Woman!
