To keep it fully transparent, if I’m on a first date and I pick her up in an Uber, is that a bad first impression? I don’t have a car, but I don’t want to miss out on getting to know a great person.

Hi Anonymous,
Let me be honest, I would not be upset if a man picked me up on a first date in an Uber. However, there are women who say they do not want to date men who do not own cars. Those women may possibly be upset. So my answer is, it depends on the woman.
That said, a woman’s reaction may also depend on knowing in advance that you are picking her up in an Uber. Providing that kind of information upfront can help you avoid issues later. Did you let your date know beforehand? If not, that may surprise her and her reaction may or may not be receptive. Also, did you tell her that you did not have a car? How did she react? If you did tell her you do not own a car and her response or body language felt negative to you, there may be a good chance she will react negatively to dating you.
There are definitely women out there who refuse to date men who don’t own cars, very often because they have created some sort of “list” that they abide by. I think these women may certainly miss out on great guys because they pick these surface things as reasons not to date.
In your case, even without a car you still wanted to pick your date up, which is a very chivalrous thing to do. You could have easily just asked her to meet you out somewhere. That says a lot about your character and character has more to do with compatibility than owning a car.
I hope for your date’s sake she sees that about you and doesn’t miss out. Plus, even if you did own a car a date in an Uber is actually not a bad idea, especially if you both plan on drinking. It guarantees that no one will be drinking and driving!
Anyway, best of luck on your date!
