The article “A Raunchy Rap Challenge Is Making Some Question The Morals of These Celebrities” popped across my social media feed this morning. If you do not know what the #FortheDChallenge is, it a rap challenge to see who can come up with the most clever lyrics for what they would do for sex, i.e. the “D.” (There is also a #ForthePChallenge in case you were wondering).

This particular challenge, for the uptight among us, is definitely a “clutch your pearls” moment. But, if you are a sensible, rational human, you will understand that the #FortheDChallenge is first and foremost a joke.

Over the past week many women, not just celebrities, have hopped on this challenge. To be honest I have been very entertained by the creativity many of the women have shown. Some of these videos have been outright hilarious. While enjoying these videos I did see a few people complaining about women doing this challenge. This group, the “fun police,” show up anytime women do anything just for fun.

This article, questioning the “morals” of women participating in this challenge goes too far. Why? Because it’s supposed to be humorous; it’s just for fun. The #FortheDChallenge should add some lightness to your life. In the world of humor, humor is usually humorous because it crosses a comfort “line” to be funny, something that in the entertainment world women, especially attractive women, are accused of not being. In this case, we have these drop-dead gorgeous women (Issa Rae, Regina Hall, Sanaa Lathan, Gabrielle Union, Erykah Badu) rapping about what they would do for the “D” to be FUNNY. And, guess what? They are!

Let’s just get to the real heart of this issue. The reason people are questioning the morals of women doing this challenge is because of sexism. Sexism never likes women to have control of their sexuality. The fact that women are rapping about sex openly and humorously is really what people have an issue with, because women are only supposed to like or talk about sex behind closed doors and ONLY in the sense of providing pleasure for a man. As soon as a woman steps outside of the bounds that sexism has set up, it suddenly becomes a “moral” issue. There are people who believe that women will be perceived as less “worthy” or “upstanding” because they did the the #FortheDChallenge. This is code for calling women who take control and are open about their sex lives, “hoes,” a label used for women who just won’t stay in “their place.”

“Date Like A Woman”

A woman’s worth has nothing to do with her sex life. In my book, there is a section on, “Your greatest asset is not your vagina.” No matter what people say or how hard they try to attach value to a woman’s sex life, it is simply not possible. In fact, all the men who were attracted to the gorgeous women in the #FortheDChallenge are still attracted to them. That’s right. Despite all the chatter, not one man who likes any of the women in the #FortheDChallenge would turn down those women if they had an opportunity to be with them.

Of course, there are those who say, “But what about the teenage girls doing the #FortheDChallenge?” Let me get this straight. You are upset because teenage girls are making jokes about sex??? That’s upsetting to you??? I am not sure why people want to deny the fact that teens have sex. It is a fact. More importantly, teenagers who have access to sexual education are less likely to become pregnant and less likely to get sexually transmitted diseases. Yes, teenagers having information about sex actually makes them less likely to engage in risky sexual behavior. But, what does that have to do with the #FortheDChallenge? If they are writing jokes and rapping about sex they are probably, you guessed it, not actually having sex. On top of that, a teenage girl who is free enough to rap about sex is an empowered individual. In other words, there are other things you could probably be more upset about than teenagers doing the #FortheDChallenge.

And on that note, I just wrote a blog #ForthatD…
